Eminem to Play Troubled Boxer in ‘Southpaw’
In 2002, ’8 Mile’ grossed above $100 million at the domestic package office and suggested which Marshall Mathers, AKA Eminem, had serious potential as a leading man. Despite that film’s good results and his enduring popularity (his or her latest album, ‘Recovery,’ just lately received ten Grammy nominations), he’s nevertheless to return to the silver screen in any major capacity other than their hilarious cameo in ‘Funny People’.
Now, in accordance with Deadline, he looks ready to make his return to a theater near you in ‘Southpaw,I a drama currently being scripted by Kurt Sutter, the man behind the Forex network’s biker drama ‘Sons involving Anarchy.’ The premise is really a classic rags-to-riches story, following a welterweight fighter who brawls his way to the title, only to see his / her world crash down all around him due to tragedy. Quite simply, it sounds like 97.8% of every boxing movie ever made, nevertheless something about the concept will need to have excited Dreamworks, who have picked up the unfinished script, which will be done by February.
Sutter says that the project is the result of years of chats with the rapper and the history, like ’8 Mile’ before it, can be hugely inspired by his / her real world experiences — they’ve just been transposed to the boxing ring:
In its core, this is a retelling associated with his struggles over the last 5 years of his life, while using boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to Marshall being a lefty, which would be to boxing what a white artist is to hip hop; dangerous, undesirable and completely unorthodox. It’s a very much harder road for a southpaw compared to a right handed boxer.
’8 Mile’ supplied sufficient evidence that Eminem is capable of doing delivering a fine performance as well as he’s undoubtedly still a new force to be reckoned together with on the music charts, though the man’s pushing 40 and just has a single film underneath his belt. Is it too far gone for him to, please excuse the pun, return in the ring? Will bavarian motor works logo actually buy this skinny white guy as a boxer? What will separate ‘Southpaw’ from the dozens of additional movies with identical plots?
Maybe a great script, a fantastic lead performance and a wonderful director. We’ll just have to monitor this one.
